Wood Fireplaces & Stoves

There is a lot you can do on your own to keep your wood fireplace or stove in top condition. More complicated maintenance should be left to a certified chimney sweep or service technician.

  1. Have the fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a certified chimney sweep
  2. Check the chimney and flue exterior for structural damage; make necessary repairs
  3. Repair all cracks and loose bricks of the fireplace interior
  4. Clean glass doors regularly

  5. Clean out ashes at least once a week
  6. Store emptied ashes outside in a non-combustible container with a tight lid
  7. Keep the area around the chimney free of bird nests, tree branches and other debris
  8. Install a chimney cap to keep animals and debris out of the chimney
  9. Repair or replace damaged or rusted damper, glass door hinges, grates
  10. Replace damaged fireplace tools
