Fireplace/Wood Stove Price Comparison

Variety and options

As with most home fixtures, fireplaces and wood stoves have a huge variety of styles, sizes, and associated price tags. Whether discussing mantels, andirons, or other hearth products, you can spend virtually as much or as little as you choose to – but it is important to ensure that you are getting what you pay for. Although luxury fireplaces and woodstoves can cost many times the prices that we specify, the high-end price tags are often more for aesthetic features than for the technical specifications or heating ability that a given heating appliance offers. It is very important that you have an idea in mind of what you want in terms of cost, function, and style before shopping for a fireplace, or else you might wind up paying more than you planned to for an option that looks great, but offers no more utility than a less expensive and more understated choice.

Wood Fireplaces : $500 and up for material only. A fully installed deluxe model can be as much as $5,000 - $10,000 or even more if custom-designed and using exotic materials or architecture.

Woodstoves : $500 - $2,500 for the woodstove only. A fully installed woodstove ranges from $1,700 - $3,000 and up. As with other fixtures, size and design affects the price tag. Paying more doesn't guarantee a better stove, nor does paying less guarantee a lower quality unit. Some wood stoves are designed for aesthetic appeal, others for function. You may pay more for a beautiful woodstove that offers limited functionality or for an ugly woodstove which performs admirably – units that offer both are considerably more expensive than some compromise between the two.

Gas Fireplaces: $600 - $3,000 for the gas fireplace only. A fully installed gas fireplace ranges from $1,200 - $5,000 and up.

Gas Logs: $300 - $700 for the gas logs only. Add $300 - $600 for installation into an existing fireplace.

Glass Fireplace Doors: $250 - $1,000 for the fireplace doors only, varying with size and type of metal and glass materials. Add $85 - $150 for installation.

As with any pricing estimate, these numbers are ballpark figures only and prices will vary by manufacturer, retailer and region. These prices should help you establish what kind of a budget you will need in order to accomplish your goals for your home heating and ambience needs, or both.
